I couldn’t stop thinking about Gabriella. She’s just different from any other girl at school. She’s smart and beautiful and has this wittiness about her that just makes me smile. Her laugh, it was so heart-warming. It made you want to laugh along. She’s so kind unlike Destiny. I really don’t understand why I ever dated her. Even if it just lasted 2 months. I let her beauty take over and that wasn’t a smart decision. She kept talking about petty little things in which I had absolutely no interest.
I was really shy speaking to Gabby, I just feared she’d tell me no or thought that I was joking. Today when she was by me, it was as if the house were complete. It was just me and her. I learnt a couple things about her that were mind blowing. Like I had no idea she spoke another language and that she’s very flexible.
I should’ve kept my mouth shut at dinner though. I could tell that it shook up her entire mood and the atmosphere in the room felt so heavy in a weird way. I didn’t want her to like be all depressed about it even though it may not seem so right now. Destiny does that with almost every girl at school. She feels that she’s the best and that everyone should be reminded of that. I really hope Gabriella will forgive me for saying that. I said it to help her, not to purposely upset her.
I took up my phone and scrolled through my contacts. I didn’t see her name. Damn, I forgot to ask her for her number. I was about to throw my phone back on my bed when one of my homies called.
“Blake.” I answered.
“Eyo homie, we bout to shoots some hoops. You coming?” My friend Tafari asked.
I looked at the time. 8:15. “Uhm, sure thing. See yall in 15 then.”
“Kool” he replied and I hung up. I quickly showered and got my basketball things. I walked downstairs and my parents still weren’t home. I decided to leave a note and then rushed out the door. It’s about 10 minutes walking to the basketball court.
When I got there, my homies Tafari, Jelani and Braxton were already dribbling up and down the court. We dabbed each other up and then played for like an hour. We then took a break.
“So what’s new with yall?” Braxton asked looking at me and the others.
“Nothing much. Just chilling.” Jelani replied and Braxton shook his head in agreement. I was too gone with my thoughts of Gabriella. I faintly heard them call my name. When Braxton emptied his water on my head is when I finally looked up.
“What?!” I shouted irritated.
“Yow chill son. We asked you something.”
“Sorry man, what was it?” I apologized.
“I asked”, Jelani said,” So what’s new?”
“Oh nothing much.”
“You’re lying. Something is on your mind.” Braxton replied.
I sighed. “So I think I like this girl at our school. She was over today at my house.”
“Oh nice. Bro scored himself a shawdy.” Tafari shouted and they started playfully punching me and laughing.
“So who is she?” He then asked.
“Gabriella…” I replied with a smile and you could literally hear a pin drop on the court. All of them watched me with funny faces.
“Yow, ain’t that girl like handicap or something?” Jelani asked. I watched him pissed.
“And so what, she’s still one of the prettiest and the smartest and the kindest though, so fall back.”
“Chill bro. He didn’t mean to offend you.” Braxton said tapping me on the shoulder. I rolled my eyes and took a sip of my water.
“But seriously though, that would be weird to be seen with her. Like you ain’t scared ?”
“The only thing I’m scared about right now, is that I make her unhappy. I really like her. You guys just gotta respect that as my friends.”
“Don’t worry, we got you.” Tafari said and they nodded in agreement.
We played for another hour and by 10:30 pm, I got home. Still no parents. I hated this. We were so rich, but yet my parents were never home. I missed the old days back in Kansas City. We were really a family. Now, it feels like I’m on my own already.
I took another shower and got out another pair of boxers. I then got into bed. I saw something sparkling at the foot of my bed. I got up and went to it. It was a heart shaped diamond earring. Gabriella was wearing it. I’ll give it to her tomorrow. That would also be my excuse to talk to her if she’s angry.
I fell asleep thinking about everything that happened today including Gabriella. “Gabriella, if you’re listening. It’s okay to be afraid.” I whispered into the night.
